STUDENT DROP-OFF SAFETY CONCERNS

Attention Parents:

Due to safety concerns, students who are dropped off in the morning should be dropped off in the student parking lot. While in this parking lot, please pull forward as far as possible along the sidewalk nearest the school before letting students out. This should allow students to get to class as efficiently as possible and reduce the amount of time required to drop off students. It is unsafe to allow students out of vehicles along Spalding Drive or in the staff parking lot. Drivers in both of these locations have put our students and staff members in jeopardy of being injured.

NHS NAMED AN ADVANCED PLACEMENT HONOR SCHOOL

Georgia State Superintendent Dr. John Barge named Norcross High School an Advanced Placement (AP) Honor School. NHS was named an AP Honor School in 3 categories, based on the results of 2012 AP classes and exams:

- AP ACCESS & SUPPORT SCHOOLS: Schools with at least 30% of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African- American and/or Hispanic and 30% of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.

- AP STEM SCHOOLS: Schools with students testing in at least two (2) AP math courses and two (2) AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science)

- AP STEM ACHIEVEMENT SCHOOLS: Schools with students testing in at least 2 AP math courses and 2 AP science courses and at least 40% of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of three (3) or higher.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES

Following are GCPS procedures for inclement weather and how the school system handles school cancellations:

GCPS schools and facilities may close in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which present threats to the safety of students, staff, or school property.

It is more likely for school to be cancelled in the early morning- due to dangerous road conditions that formed overnight, than for school to let out early because bad weather is moving in.

As a rule, the decision to cancel school is made before 6 a.m. The school system immediately notifies all major radio and television stations in metro Atlanta. In addition, the information is announced on GCPS TV and posted on the school system's web site.

GCPS TV can be found on the following Gwinnett County cable channels:
AT&T - - Listed under Local Government
Charter - Channel 22
Comcast - Channel 24 or 26

Should severe weather move into the area during the day, plans to cancel classes will be announced on metro-Atlanta radio and TV stations and on the school system's web site before school is dismissed.

Accessing Quality Online Resources at Home just got easier
"Your project is due tomorrow?! And you're just starting now?"  Chances are you've probably had a conversation like this with your student, but helping your procrastinator quickly find quality online resources at home just got easier. Students now have access to both the library media catalog and the Online Research Library through the Student Portal allowing them to search for both print and online resources from home. And just recently, passwords to access all these online resources, like encyclopedias and subscription databases, were linked through the portal. Once your student logs into the portal, simply click on the lock icon next to the Online Research Library link to see the passwords.
