Amnesty International TBA AIUSA PURPOSE:  Amnesty International is a worldwide organization that works on behalf of prisoners of conscience in other countries.  These people may have been threatened, imprisoned illegally, tortured and/or killed due to their religion, ethnicity, politics or other non-criminal factors.  AI works only on behalf of individuals who have neither used nor advocated violence.  AI is opposed to the use of the death penalty as a form of punishment.  AI is not associated with any political party, ideology or religious orientation.     ACTIVITIES:  AI’s main activity is letter writing on behalf of specific people through what is known as the “Urgent Action Network.”  The NHS chapter is notified once per month with specific details of a case needing our attention.  Members then write letters to certain individuals involved in the case to request their cooperation and adherence to the International Declaration of Human Rights.     Richard_Southerland@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

Art Club Carisa Griffin and Ashley Overmyer   Promote visual arts at NHS, provide a creative envirnoment to produce art, and collaborate with other organizations for school wide events. Asian Students Association (ASA) Mrs. Thongdara & Mrs. Yang   Mission  The Asian Students Association (ASA) promotes awareness of Asian culture and fosters the development of social and educational support for Asian students at Norcross High School.  Preserving the Asian traditions, ASA encourages superior scholarship and members’ participation in community activities.  ASA promotes friendship and mutual understanding among all people, regardless of national origin or ethnic heritage.    To represent the Asian-student body.To voice issues of concern to the school administration.  To encourage pride in our various ethnic backgrounds and heritage. Junior Achievement Company:  Norcross' Finest, Inc. Laverne F. Moss JA of Georgia JA Company Program helps young people appreciate and better understand the role of business in our society.  It provides basic economic education by allowing students to organize and operate an actual business enterprise to learn about the structure of the U.S. free enterprise system and the benefits it provides. La Voz Martha Cook, Erica DeMeritt, Rosalva Pena, Ellen Sumner   The mission of La Voz is to empower Hispanic students at NHS and to celebrate Hispanic culture. National Honor Society Dr. Cassandra Harrington The National Honor Society is a local, state, and national affiliation. The purposes of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. National Society of Black Engineers Jr. Chapter Philip Belfrom, Camilla Thompson-Stith, Jenelle Smith National Society of Black Engineers NSBE's mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.     NSBE is comprised of more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses, 75 Alumni Extension chapters nationwide and 75 Pre-College chapters. These chapters are geographically divided into six regions. National Spanish Honor Society Nicole D'Antonio & Aaron Mullins Locally and nationally affiliated The National Spanish Honor Society recognizes outstanding achievement in advanced Spanish language courses and fosters the spirit of service to our school and community. This year the NHS NSHS is conducting ESOL tutoring in collaboration with the ESOL department, as well as conducting Spanish tutoring for students of Spanish. NSHS also has Teacher Service days to aid the Foreign Language teachers with non-instructional duties. Odyssey of the Mind Mary Bergh and Anne Granville Odyssey of the Mind International Helping students grow through creative problem solving. Long-term and short-term problems are presented at local, state, and international competitions Students prepare a long-term problem that is presented to a panel of judges. They are also required to solve a short-term problem that they do not see until the day of the competion. Senior Beta Club Paula Bonaker and Ann Steed National Beta Club in Spartanburg, SC To promote the ideals of character, service and leadership among secondary students, to reward meritorious achievement and to encourage and assist studnets in continuing their education after high school. We raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their Pennies for Patients program, for scholarships to be awarded to senior class members of the club who apply.
